Name: Dana Fortune Location: Miami, Florida Size: 850 square feet Years lived in: 1 year, renting
The thing that stands out first when you walk into artist Dana Fortune’s Miami rental apartment is the giant, soft rainbow art piece made of colorful pom-poms, which was a piece she made for her first ever art show. “My personal aesthetic is inspired by mid-century modern design and a whole lot of color,” she says in her video tour above.
But that big beautiful blob of yarn isn’t the only vibrant thing in her rental, nor is it the only thing she’s made herself. A mid-century modern dresser—which she scored for only $50—got the cheeriest update ever thanks to rainbow painted drawers. Ugly laminate rental countertops are no more in the kitchen, thanks to her DIY marble-patterned contact paper DIY. And her sprawling gallery wall—a mix of both art and other objects she’s collected through her travels—certainly counts as an impressive DIY project, as well.
No matter what direction you look in, rainbows are present. In fact, Dana can’t remember a time when she didn’t love them. Many people even ask her why she loves them so much. The answer isn’t just for looks, though.
“I have dealt on and off for the last 10 years with severe depression and anxiety and color is healing and transformative and rainbows are just really fun and uplifting,” she says in her video. “So I’ve worked to surround myself with color that way even if i’m not feeling happy and bright on the inside, my surroundings help lift my spirits.”
You can see all of her apartment in her video tour above, as well as visit her website and her Instagram for more apartment peeks. A vegan, you may also spot her colorful pom-pom art as a background on the vegan instagram account she runs, @vegansnackparty .
Thanks Dana! And thank you to Kelly Popejoy for stills and video!
